Sunetra Humbad was born and raised in southern India. She brought her memories of traditional Indian meals west with her and created uncomplicated versions of the food of her youth for members of her American cooking classes. One of her cooking students, Amy Schafer Boger, took exclusive notes that later developed into these recipes. Together they present recipes for your favorite chutneys, curries, dals, rice dishes and entrees.
A sampling of the recipes to be enjoyed include Sweet Lassi, Mango Chutney, Cucumber Raita, Aloo Paratha (Potato-Filled Flat Bread), Vegetable Biryani, Spinach Saag Paneer, and Potato Dhamalu (Small potatoes in a Spicy Sauce). Most of the cooking methods, techniques, and ingredients in these recipes are basic and familiar, and were developed with western cooks in mind. Menu plans help put it all together. So even inexperienced cooks will be able to create authentic tasting Indian dishes that family and friends will love.
