Welcome to Native Voices Books
7th Generation is dedicated to publishing quality fiction and nonfiction titles for children and young adults. American Indian authors provide cultural accuracy and exciting contemporary content showcasing the diversity of Native American Nations and Indigenous people on Turtle Island.
Native Voices Books and 7th Generation are imprints of Book Publishing Company, a community-owned, independent press dedicated to publishing titles that promote a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. We are located on The Farm, an intentional community in Summertown, Tennessee, and have been in business since 1974.
Our 7th Generation imprint offers Native children’s books for a variety of age groups. Our Native Trailblazer series of themed biographies about accomplished Native Americans gives readers contemporary role models. The Pathfinders collection are short, high-interest novels with contemporary Indigenous themes written specifically for striving middle-school students reading below grade level. Reading levels from grade 2.0 to 6.0. Interest level ages 9-12.
All 7th Generation books are written by Native authors to ensure accuracy.
We first became involved with the Native community in 1978, when volunteers from The Farm community provided medical and radio-communications support––along with video, audio, and photo documentation––to hundreds of Native Americans who walked from San Francisco to Washington, DC, to raise awareness in Congress and throughout the United States about the relentless, ongoing oppression of America’s Native people.
In 1980, our association with Native Americans expanded when we published Basic Call to Consciousness, edited by Akwesasne Notes. This important work is the impassioned vision of sovereign Native people and calls for an end to the destruction of the natural world.
Our alliance with Adolf Hungry Wolf and Good Medicine Books led to the formation of our next imprint, Native Voices. We’ve also teamed up with Cherokee Publications and Crazy Crow to provide a range of titles on Native American culture and history.Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
